Meet The Team

Prof Cherney currently works as Professor of Medicine in the University of Toronto’s Department of Medicine, and as a Clinician Scientist at the University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospitals, where he is director of the Renal Physiology Laboratory.​

His research program – focusing on physiological factors that initiate cardiovascular and renal disease in patients with
diabetes – is closely aligned with his integrated and interdisciplinary cardiac-renal-endocrine Clinic at the University Health Network. Developed for patients who have needs in two or more of these common areas of medical practice, the Clinic aims to unite all the relevant medical specialists and healthcare professionals within one facility, providing care in an effective and timely manner.​

Dr Kanumilli has worked as a GP in South Manchester for the past 20 years, with a specialist interest in diabetes and cardiology. He is a Community Diabetes consultant at Manchester University Foundation Trust, Clinical Network Lead for Diabetes across
Greater Manchester and East Cheshire, honorary primary care research lead for diabetes at the Greater Manchester Clinical Research Network, and a Diabetes UK Clinical Champion.​

​He is currently in the process of setting up the interdisciplinary integrated care model in Manchester, and is actively involved with the ongoing integration agenda – in order to provide patients with seamless care between primary and secondary sectors. The aim is to reduce hospital visits and ensure the development of a one-stop clinic, improving outcomes and patient satisfaction across the Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolic risk continuum.​

Prof Khunti is Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine at the University of Leicester, UK.

He is also Co-Director of the Leicester Diabetes Centre, a national and international centre of excellence in Type 2 diabetes. Now one of Europe’s largest diabetes facilities, the centre is responsible for world-leading clinical research, evidence-based education and cutting-edge innovation.

With more than eight years’ experience in establishing and managing a Diabetes centre of excellence, Prof Khunti also leads a research group that is working on the early identification and treatment of people who either have cardiometabolic diseases or are at increased risk of developing them.

Professor Khunti is also Director of the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in Applied Research Collaborations (ARC) East Midlands, Director of Centre for Ethnic Health Research, and Director of Leicester Real World Evidence Unit. ​

Prof Lam is a Senior Consultant of the National Heart Centre in Singapore, co-founder of Us2.ai and Professor of the Duke-NUS Cardiovascular Academic Clinical Program.

Recognised globally for her expertise in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, she started the first programme on this subject in Singapore, as well as the first Women’s Heart Health Clinic.

Prof Lam also co-founded Us2.ai, a Singapore-based start-up that aims to automate the fight against heart disease, using AI software to simplify and democratise ultrasound of the heart. The National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS) provides one-stop comprehensive cardiac care, and is dedicated to optimising Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolic outcomes through continuous advancement in patient care, education and training, and research.

Dr Neeland is Director of the University Hospitals (UH) Center for Cardiovascular Prevention, Director of the Translational Science Unit, and Co-Director of the Center for Integrated and Novel Approaches in Vascular-Metabolic Disease (CINEMA program), Senior Attending for UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute, and Associate Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.​

He is a general and preventive cardiologist and clinical investigator with expertise in obesity, diabetes, and prevention of cardiovascular disease.​

He is a Fellow of the American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Cardiology and serves on several national committees with the American Heart Association, including as Immediate Past Chair of the Obesity Committee of the AHA and a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) Health and author on the upcoming CKM guidelines. He also serves as an Associate Editor for Circulation, the leading cardiovascular journal in the United States.​

Prof Spaak is a clinical cardiologist specialised in hypertension and heart failure. His research is focused on sympathetic activation and cardiorenal syndrome, hypertension and heart failure, sleep apnea, vascular medicine and integrated care.

As the clinical head for the cardiovascular research lab and the multiprofessional integrated clinic for patients with concomitant cardiovascular disease, renal failure and diabetes (HND-centrum) – Prof Spaak has more than twelve years of experience in establishing and managing an interdisciplinary, integrated care clinic. Founded in November 2013, HND-centrum staff consists of physicians and registered nurses specialising in cardiology, nephrology and endocrinology.

Peter is an Internal Medicine and Emergency medicine specialist with a main interest in multimorbidity, preventive medicine and innovative health technology solutions. He was the Head of Innovation in Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism Biopharmaceutical at AstraZeneca in the Global HQ. His current position in AstraZeneca is the Head of Innovation in Italy. He has spent many years as a Researcher at the Biomagnetism and Clinical Physiology International Center (BACPIC) in Rome, Italy, to which he is still affiliated. He also consults in a different capacity the dynamic ecosystem of start-ups and technology solutions in healthcare, including as Senior Advisor for Health Technology 180.

As a passionate clinician, researcher and business leader, he is engaged in identifying and implementing effective, personalised and potentially scalable healthcare solutions. His goal is to help people live healthy lives, and to contribute to the prevention of epidemic-scale diseases that share common pathways and removable behaviour-related risk factors.

Peter has co-authored a number of manuscripts published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, mainly in the fields of cardiology, resuscitation, diabetes, magnetocardiography, real-world evidence and health economic models.

Peter has conceived this project and promoted the CaReMe Global Alliance.

Michael is an economist and business administrator with an M.Sc. in Economics and Business Administration from universities in Denmark, Belgium and South Africa.

He is passionate about helping to advance dialogue between stakeholders in the health sector to the benefit of patients, and cares deeply for healthcare. After 15 years in the pharmaceutical industry, he established Copentown in 2008 under the motto of “We care for healthcare”. Copentown is an independent boutique healthcare consulting company that specialises in supporting and solving complex strategic, access and communication challenges for its global healthcare clients.

With the benefit of a full life-cycle perspective and joint inside-outside industry views, Michael is in a unique position to offer management advice, access to a rich network of cross-functional expertise and practical solutions to the CaReMe Global Alliance Project team.

Irina Osovskaya brings over 20 years of experience leading data, digital, and AI-driven transformation in the pharmaceutical
industry. She has held senior roles at Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca, where she led strategy, innovation, and large-scale delivery across R&D, Commercial, and IT functions.​

​Irina was also involved in early CaReMe initiatives, including the public awareness campaign and the business case for the
CVRM patient platform.​

​She has supported global initiatives across cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, and oncology therapy areas, delivering award-
winning partnerships with healthcare systems, academia, and start-ups. ​

She is also a member of the Forbes Technology Council, a peer reviewer for the BMJ AI Journal, and Vice-Chair of the Health AI
Committee at United Kingdom Digital Health & Care (UKDHC).​
